It’s been a long time since I was last in Norway, but I still love this view of the old section of Bergen, also known as Bryggen. This street was once a major trading warf during the Hanseatic League. These waterfront trade areas are common in Scandinavia. The city has been destroyed by fires several times, but the buildings that stand today are on the foundations that have existed for centuries. I love visiting places that existed during the times my ancestors were living. This area of Bergen is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most of my ancestors lived in small rural farming areas. I would image that the cities full of connected buildings like these must have been a dramatic contrast to the places where they lived.
